CULTURAL APOLOGETICS
Christianity is not a series of truths in the plural, but rather truth spelled with a capital “T.” Truth about total reality, not just about religious things.
Biblical Christianity is Truth concerning total reality – and the intellectual holding of
that total Truth and then living in the light of that Truth.
— Francis Schaeffer, Address at the University of Notre Dame, April 1981
The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him,
but because he loves what is behind him.
— G.K. Chesterton
As Christians, we are called to represent God in the marketplace of ideas, literally to tear down those false arguments and pretensions that set themselves up against the knowledge of God (2 Corinthians 10:5). We should not back down from controversial or difficult discussions and issues of the day; rather we should speak the truth in love bringing to bear God’s Truth revealed in Scripture and written on the hearts of man (Romans 2:15). The love of God should be seen as relevant to the perceived problems of the world – hunger, disease, poverty, crime, etc. – just as Christ called His disciples to feed the hungry and cloth the naked. We must not allow the world or the church to mistakenly spread the “sacred/secular” myth that religion should be separate from reason or that faith is incompatible with facts. We must be wise in dealing with outsiders knowing how to answer everyone (Colossians 4:6). As citizens of two kingdoms, it is our citizenship in the heavenly kingdom that compels us to serve as agents of God’s common grace for our temporal kingdom here on earth.
