PASSION & DEVOTION
He therefore is the devout man, who lives no longer to his own will, or the way and the spirit of the world,
but to the sole will of God.
— William Law, A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life
More character is assessed not by what a man knows but by what he loves.
— Augustine
The concept of passion, zeal and devotion as part of the Christian walk has unfortunately been distorted by a few. While other religious factions promote zeal without knowledge, the Bible warns against this (Proverbs 19:2) and encourages the Christian to walk in truth while living passionately for the Lord. Great men and women of the faith now surround us as a cloud of witnesses encouraging us with their testimonies of faith to throw off the sin that so easily entangles and run with perseverance the race marked out for us (Hebrews 12:1-2). As Isaac Ambrose wrote in The Christian Soldier, “Soldiers of Christ…you have an arduous work allotted to you, and…you have neither time nor talent to throw away.” Let us live a life of passion and devotion to the glory of God and walk in a manner worthy of our calling (Ephesians 4:1).
