One Act Play

A Monster Calls

Written and devised by Patrick Ness, Adam Peck, and Sally CooksonIn this powerful new adaptation from visionary director Sally Cookson, the bestselling novel by Patrick Ness is brought to the stage to tell the stunning story of love, loss and courage anew. Conor has the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill, ever since she started the treatments that don't quite seem to be working. But tonight is different. Tonight, when he wakes, there's a visitor at his window. It's ancient, elemental, a force of nature.

And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. The final idea of the late, award-winning writer Siobhan Dowd, developed into an extraordinary and heartbreaking novel by Patrick Ness, and now adapted for a production that brings the tale to a new audience.

Spring Musical

Bye Bye Birdie

Book by Michael Stewart / Music by Charles Strouse / Lyrics by Lee Adams / Originally Produced by Edward Padula

Presented by arrangement with Tams-Whitmark Music Library, Inc.

It’s 1960 and rock star Conrad Birdie is the biggest thing to top the charts. Women love him, men want to be him and teenage girls around the country scream with glee at the mere mention of his name. When the United States Army drafts Birdie, manager Albert Peterson sees his meal ticket preparing to fly the coop (much to the delight of longtime love Rose Alvarez, who can’t wait for Albert to ditch the music biz and become something respectable, like an English teacher). Desperate for a publicity stunt big enough to help them survive Birdie’s departure, Albert and Rose hatch a plan: send Conrad to small-town America to plant his goodbye kiss on one lucky fan for the entire world to see. Their selection of super fan Kim MacAfee sends the wholesome enclave of Sweet Apple, Ohio into chaos. Kim’s boyfriend, Hugo, can’t take the humiliation of his lady love’s televised lip-lock.

With Conrad staying for the week at the MacAfee’s household in Ohio, their life is completely turned upside down. A frustrated Mr. MacAfee threatens to put his foot down, until he hears the family will be appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show. Rosie, enraged by Albert’s behavior after he failed to stand up his overbearing mother’s objections toward her, enlists the aide of Hugo in a plan to undermine the big show. On The Ed Sullivan Show, Conrad prepares to give Kim one last kiss, but at the last minute, Hugo steps onstage and punches Conrad, knocking him to the floor. Everyone scatters, and Rosie bids Albert a bitter farewell, leaving him alone on national television.

Rose can’t take another minute of Albert’s distracted ways. The parents of Sweet Apple can’t take its teens' riotous rebellion, inspired by the arrival of bad-boy Birdie. Will Sweet Apple ever be the same?

Middle School One Act Play

Fantastic Mr. Fox

Adapted from the Roald Dahl novel by Sally Reid

Boggis and Bunce and Bean/One fat, one short, one lean/These horrible crooks/So different in looks/Were nonetheless equally mean." And so begins another enchanting Roald Dahl tale concerning the extraordinary adventures of three nasty farmers, two curious creatures, a family of foxes, and our hero—a most fantastic fellow! Your audience will be fascinated as they watch Boggis, the (enormously fat!) chicken farmer; Bunce, the (pot-bellied) duck-and-goose farmer; and Bean the (thin) turkey-and-apple farmer, attempt to foil the efforts of Mr. Fox and his friends—the Badgers, the Moles, the Rabbits and the Weasels. And then, of course, they'll be held in suspense as the animals unwittingly trap themselves in Bean's Secret Cider Cellar—much to the displeasure of Rat (a rude creature) and all appear doomed. In the end, they'll cheer as Mr. Fox provides a glorious feast for each and every one—and gives rise to Mrs. Fox's proclamation that "My husband is one fantastic fox!

PCA Fall Play

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

Adapted by Dwayne Hartford. From the book by Kate DiCamillo.

Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene, but Edward doesn’t care. He is vain and self-centered. He has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak. As years pass by, Edward meets many different people in many different situations: an older grieving couple who find comfort in Edward’s presence, a hobo and his dog who introduce Edward to a whole community of homeless wanderers, a farmer in need of a scarecrow, a sad little boy and his very ill sister, and finally a doll mender and an old doll who teach Edward an invaluable lesson. Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it is to love, what it is to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again. Based on Kate DiCamillo’s beautiful novel of the same name, the play is a theatrical tour de force for an ensemble of actors and musicians.
